...seeing that you have put off the old self
with its practices and have put on the new self...
The Battles and the War
Isn’t it astounding? Through faith, by God’s grace, and because of Christ’s sacrifice, we have a new heart and are a new creation! (2 Corinthians 5:17)
Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. (Galatians 5:25)
Our new selves have been created to be like God, in true righteousness and holiness. (Ephesians 4:24)
Basically, this means that we are free, every day of our lives, to put off our old sinful ways and are able to live in the light of the new self, which we have become in putting on Christ. We still battle against sin daily, but on the cross and in his resurrection, Jesus has won the decisive victory against our sin. And the Spirit determined our ultimate triumph when we were made new creations.
With our certain victory in mind, we must be open to the guidance and the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit. We must live by the Spirit. We are called to keep in step with the Spirit. We are saved in order to bear the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. (Galatians 5:22-3) We can do this because we belong to Christ Jesus and we have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. (Galatians 5:24)
Prayer: Dear Father, by your grace we can definitively put off the old self and put on the new self. You have united us with Christ in salvation. Please strengthen us in our daily battle against sin. When we are tempted, remind us that we are new creations in Christ. When we sin, help us to repent, and remind us that on the cross you have won the great victory over our sin. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
