Hebrews 2:5-9

 It is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking. 6But there is a place where someone has testified:  “What is mankind that you are mindful of them, a son of man that you care for him? 7You made them a little lower than the angels; you crowned them with glory and honor 8and put everything under their feet.” In putting everything under them, God left nothing that is not subject to them. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to them. 9But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

 The Mystery

When God created the world, he gave humans the authority to rule over it. He didn’t give that authority to the angels - although angels are more superior than humans.

The author of Hebrews quotes Psalm 8:4-6, where David was astonished about the mystery that an almighty God would not only think of and care for the weak mankind but also make them just a little lower than angels - enabling them to govern the created order.

Alas, we sinned and the end result was that we are unable to govern the earth as God intended us to! Sin separated us from God and as we know, it is misery, disharmony and hate all around. Above all, it also means eternal separation from God!

There was only one way to turn this terrible situation around. God took on human form in the person of Jesus - 100% God and yet 100% human. Consequently, Jesus was made a little lower than angels (just like us). In doing so, he could take our place in atoning for our sins.

By putting our faith in Jesus and his sacrifice, we have peace with God. Ultimately, there will come a day when man governs the earth under the lordship of Jesus just as God intended - where the earth is filled with peace, joy and harmony.

Like David, Charles Wesley was also astonished about that mystery when he wrote the hymn - “And Can It Be”.

‘Tis mystery all! The Immortal dies!

Who can explore His strange design?

In vain the firstborn seraph tries

To sound the depths of love Divine!

’Tis mercy all! let earth adore,

Let angel minds inquire no more.

’Tis mercy all! let earth adore,

Let angel minds inquire no more!

He left His Father’s throne above,

So free, so infinite His grace;

Emptied Himself of all but love,

And bled for Adam’s helpless race:

’Tis mercy all, immense and free;

For, O my God, it found out me.

’Tis mercy all, immense and free;

For, O my God, it found out me

If you haven’t experienced salvation through Jesus, I encourage you to cry out to God to reveal it to you with the help of the Holy Spirit. There is no other way to God except through Jesus.
