Hebrews 2:1-4

We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. 2 For since the message spoken through angels was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment, 3 how shall we escape if we ignore so great a salvation? This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him. 4 God also testified to it by signs, wonders and various miracles, and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.

 Drift or Commit?

To be carried slowly by a current of air or water is one dictionary definition of drift. In our current hectic, social media opinionated world, there seem to be more and more currents seeking our attention and pulling us in a new direction. So how do we avoid drifting? When flying, a “wind correction angle” is applied to the heading that points the plane to its destination. To apply this effectively one needs to know the destination heading together with the strength and direction of the winds. Knowing only one piece of information will result in drifting off course when the winds begin to blow.

So how can we apply this as we seek to follow Jesus in our daily lives? The heading here is clear; “To love God and love your neighbour as yourself”, but the winds come in both variable strengths and directions… wars, rumours of wars, disasters of all types including natural, economic, political, social, or even amongst friends and family. For me I find reading the Bible in One Year daily devotional provides the “wind correction angles” that I need to apply to stay on my chosen heading.

But it is more than just flying alone. In addition to personal study, I also find strength and encouragement through our home group which helps keep me focused and counteracts the effects of the winds. By coming together to eat and share life together we encourage each other by sharing the wonders and various miracles that God has performed in each of our lives, reemphasizing the great salvation that we have received.

I would encourage all IPC members to commit to a home group and to share the journey of so great a salvation with the group. It helps all of us to counteract the drift and to finish the race set before us.

Prayer: Jesus, thank you for the great salvation that you enabled for me. Help me to daily set my heading to tenaciously follow you and not be blown off course by the winds around me. Amen.
