John 16:12-15

12 “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.
13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.14 He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you.15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”

“He will guide you into all the truth…”

“When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you.”
The Holy Spirit is a part of the Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
He was there from the very beginning of creation:
… and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters (Genesis 1:2).
“The Spirit of God has made me, the breath of the Almighty gives me life”
(Job 33:4).
While in the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit touched individual people at distinct times, at Pentecost he is poured out to all believers.

In John 16:7b Jesus says to his disciples: “It is for your benefit that I go away, if I do not go away the Counselor (Spirit) will not come to you.”
This is the Counselor that will come to all believers and he says in John 16:12 “I still have many things to tell you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you in all truth.”

There will be fullness of knowledge which the disciples were not able to take in at that time. Jesus knows his disciples and he knows what they can bear and what they can’t bear yet. His revelation to them is gradual, only the Holy Spirit will convey it in full. And the Holy Spirit does not speak on his own, he only speaks what he hears from the Son. The Holy Spirit does not have his own revelation apart from the Father and the Son.

The gift of the Holy Spirit, as promised by Christ to the disciples, was given to all believers at Pentecost and is present to all believers at all times now. While Christ could only speak to the people who were physically present with him, he now conveys the whole message, the whole truth, through the Holy Spirit. What was an uncommon blessing in biblical times has become a common blessing for all believers today. The truth with which the Holy Spirit guides us is the truth of Christ. The Spirit teaches us to discern right from wrong.

Prayer
Lord, let your Holy Spirit dwell richly in us and guide us in thy truth. Amen.
