Silence in God’s Presence

[Elijah] went into a cave and spent the night.

The Lord spoke to him … a gentle whisper. (1 Kings 19:9,12)

Sometimes, don’t you find, it’s difficult to let go of one’s anxieties? Negative thoughts seem to invade every action and we can no longer see clearly, make a positive or objective decision, or simply sleep in peace. And yet, we are told over and over again: “You need only to be still” (Exodus 14:14).

It is in those moments we need to pause, take a breath, be still and remember that our ways are not necessarily the Lord’s ways. He is close; we are not alone; we are safe. We must search through the confusion and cling on to the inner peace that we have deep inside us, that our Father has provided for us. And what do we do when the darkness is so full of secrets?

“In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength” (Isaiah 30:15).

We merely have to be still, to listen and to trust in him. This is when we open our hearts and minds to hear the Lord. Wait, be silent, breathe, let him come to you. “Lord, hear my prayer.”

God wants a relationship with you as a father with a child. You are his beloved child. Let him hold you.

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul (Psalm 23:1-3).

Loving God, please grant me peace of mind and calm my troubled heart. Give me the strength and clarity of mind to find my purpose and walk the path you’ve laid out for me. (Unknown)
