All Day

And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts,

to which indeed you were called in one body.

Colossians 3:15

Put On

As Christians we are called to be peacemakers. (Matthew 5:9, Galatians 5:22)   The Bible makes this abundantly clear and no Christian can be in any doubt about this calling. Hopefully, none of us will ever experience a real conflict zone, so how might we put on peacemaking, and what does it mean to let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts? (Colossians 3:15)

There is another war going on, one which has been raging since the fall of man and one in which everyone must choose a side. As Paul states in Romans 8:7, The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God. Make no mistake, our natural fallen state is enmity with God, but as Tim Keller puts it, God is the best enemy we could possibly have. He loves us and cares for us even though our sinful nature hinders our communication with God, making us his “natural enemies.” He reaches out to us in our fallen and sinful state and freely offers us his grace.

When we accept Christ and choose to live in him, we have a host of new enemies. Dr Keller identifies them as the world, the flesh and the devil. While these cannot steal our salvation, they work unceasingly to make us doubt it and to make us fearful and anxious. But fear not: When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy. (Psalm 94:19)  This is true joy which frees us from fear and anxiety and lets us experience the peace of Christ.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6-7)  So then brothers and sisters, experience the joy which comes from the Lord, by letting the peace of Christ rule in your hearts!

Prayer: Lord God Almighty, whose wisdom and power passes all understanding, I thank you for your grace which rescues me from my sinful and rebellious self. I ask that your peace will rule in my heart and that I will always know the joy and assurance which comes from that peace. This I ask in your wonderful, matchless and holy name.  Amen.
