Put on then, as God’s chosen ones,

 holy and beloved…patience

Colossians 3:12

Put On
Patience

Oh boy! When I learned that I was to write about patience, I could hear God laughing. Although he has blessed me with many gifts, my share of patience was given to others. For goodness’ sake, one of my favorite country songs is titled “I’m in a Hurry” by Alabama! The lyrics are a manifesto of my life:

I'm in a hurry to get things done;

Oh, I rush and rush until life's no fun.

All I really gotta do is live and die,

But I'm in a hurry and don't know why.

Don't know why

I have to drive so fast;

My car has nothing to prove,

But it'll do 0 to 60 in 5.2.

Some days, it is a lot harder to be patient. When we’re bringing our concerns to the Lord again and again, we grow tired of waiting. It soon begins to feel like our prayers are falling on deaf ears. Often our desire is to take control and just “do the best we can.” This impatience is our fleshly reaction to the silence although we know patience is listed as a fruit of the Holy Spirit in Galatians 5. We should confess our desire to rule our own lives and ask the Spirit to fill us, empower and direct us even as we continue to wait on the Lord.

We need to wait, to listen, and to grow in the Lord. Those hugs from our children when we teach them things and take time to listen to them, are a way that the Lord shows us he cares and listens to us. When we rush, we lose sight of the splendid things that God has given us. In Christ, we experience the patience of God all the time. He is patient with our growth in grace.

Are you Christ-like in this way?

Take the time to listen to the Lord and ask for patience. Then practice it with friends, colleagues and family. Only when we truly listen, will we truly hear.
