Put on then, as God's chosen ones,

Meekness

We must never forget that we are chosen – holy and dearly loved. God chose us just as we are with all our faults. Why? To make us in his image, to mirror his great love for us in our relationships with others in our communities.

How can we become the people he desires us to be? Compassionate, kind, humble, gentle and patient. We are just the opposite by nature. We are proud, arrogant, resentful, argumentative and malicious, the reason our lives can be bitter and heavy. So how do we “put on” meekness?

Jesus Christ is our one, true example of holy living and meekness, so we must seek to perfect our fellowship with him. The Good News of Jesus and his words are the essence of truth, not opinions. His whole life and his teachings are the perfect example of how we should live with and treat each other. He shows us how to resist human attacks and with quiet resilience to forgive.

Can we show such Christlike meekness and resist the attacks of this world in our own strength? I don’t think so. We have to let him, by his grace, dress us in the new garments he longs to clothe us in. By opening up our hearts and minds to his word, by letting his spirit enter into our lives and direct us, by letting him become our all in all and our peace. Christ invites us to lay our burdens in his care.

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble (meek) in heart and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. (Matthew 11:28-30)

His meekness is not weakness. With the grace he offers us we share the new “easy yoke” with the strong Son of God himself.
