In these you too once walked, when you were living in them.
But now you must put them all away.
Power to Walk Away
Have you ever done something and later thought about what you had done only to ask yourself: Why did I do that? What was I thinking? I know better! You have to remember, your past is in the past and you can’t “unring” a bell that’s been rung.
Before God entered our lives, our past lives, our old selves didn’t know better. And, even if we had, we were influenced by our emotions, worldly reasoning and the people around us.
From the moment Christ enters our lives we are transformed. Everything in our life changes because of who we have become in Christ. We are called to live a new life. This new life in Christ brings a new mindset. Instead of giving in to our selfish desires and sinful nature, we now have Christ to look to, to live life his way and not ours. How are you living your life? Our old ways belong in our past and have no place in our future. We are now called to live a life where we do not give in to sin. We are called to kill it! We have been given a new life. As the immigrants we were when we first came to live in Switzerland, having to learn a new language and the customs of a new home, likewise, we are citizens of heaven and must live accordingly.
The way we treat and interact with the people around us must reflect these new characteristics. Outbursts of angry words that bring others down, hatred, selfishness and pride have no place in our new life. Our new self must produce new words, new actions and new thoughts that let others feel that we are there to help them grow, think and learn.
Often in our eagerness to get our own way, we compromise who we are in Christ; it’s in those moments that we start to live outside of Christ and undo the work that God did on the Cross for us. God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, he gave us a spirit that allows us to be powerful, sensible and self-disciplined in love. We already have the power to walk away from sin today. How might this impact your fight against temptation?
