2 Corinthians 3:4 -11

Of the Spirit

A relationship with Christ is central for every Christian. This text clarifies that our Christian competence does not come from our own efforts to conform to the letter of law, but through the life provided by the Spirit.

Despite the tendency we have to seek achievements though our own efforts, we cannot become Christ-like through our own efforts, but only when we are transformed by the Spirit. The Spirit brings the capability to see the glory of Christ. Without the Spirit, unbelievers cannot see God’s glory, just as the Israelites could not bear to see the face of Moses after his encounter with God.

The Spirit-based ministry brings surpassing glory. The passage grants that a ministry based on the commandments brings a transitory glory, but also condemnation and death.   In contrast, a Spirit-based ministry gives life, righteousness, an even greater glory, and a glory that endures.

Self-confidence, the belief in one’s own abilities, is considered an essential attribute in popular culture.  Advice on building self-confidence is a mainstay of the self-improvement industry. Far greater confidence should be placed in the competence provided by the Spirit.  With the Spirit, we are able to respond to Christ’s teaching:

“Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” (Matthew 11:29)
