 Light of Light,

Did God the Father create God the Son? Can Jesus Christ be eternal and at the same time be the Son of God the Father? These questions challenged Christians in the first centuries.

Arius, a priest from Alexandria in the third and fourth centuries, argued that the Father alone is fully God, and the Son was a created being. However, the early church rejected this view as heresy, affirming in the Nicene Creed that Jesus Christ is not made by God but is, instead, uncreated, eternal, and of the same essence as the Father.

Unlike us, God exists beyond time. In human experience, a father exists before his son is born. Time shapes our perspective and makes it hard to imagine anything beyond it. But God is not bound by time. There was never a moment when God the Father existed without God the Son. The Son is co-eternal with the Father, sharing the same divine essence.

“The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.” Hebrews 1:3a (NIV)

Jesus fully radiates God’s glory because He is the One true God. He is “Light from Light,” uncreated and eternal, just as the Father is. This truth means that Jesus is equally glorious and deserving of our love, worship, and devotion.

Jesus himself declared, “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father” (John 14:9). In John 8:12, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” God, who transcends our understanding, desires to be known by us. He revealed himself through Jesus Christ, who entered our world as both fully God and fully man. The eternal Light stepped into our darkness so that we might see and know God.

This revelation gives us hope and assurance. Jesus promises that if we follow Him, we will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life. No matter our circumstances, Jesus is with us, guiding us with His eternal light. One day, we will worship Him face to face for all eternity. Until that day, let us pause and contemplate the glory of the Son—the One who is fully God and who became fully man so that we might know Him. Truly, Jesus Christ is Light from Light, shining brightly into our world and in our hearts.
