How does the Heavenly Father exhort us to search the Scriptures and train ourselves for likeness to his Son?

The Scriptures are our source of all the knowledge and wisdom our Heavenly Father wants to impart to us in regard to the way we live our lives and relate to him and to our fellow man. We hope and trust through the Scriptures that we are forever teachable.

In Romans 8:29 we read: For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. In Genesis, from the beginning of time, from creation through his Word, when his spirit moved across the face of the waters, God’s desire for mankind was to make us in his likeness. Genesis 1:26: Let us make man in our image and in our likeness. His goodness, the very essence of his being was to be in us.

The Scriptures show us how our Triune God has been Sovereign over the universe and mankind through all ages. His presence has worked and changed human customs, traditions and plans and replaced them with his own wise plans. He initiated and made covenants with his chosen people, Israel, pledging love and faithfulness to them, establishing sacrifice as a substitution of life for life and giving them the Mosaic laws by which to live righteous lives.

Scripture shows us how we failed to live godly lives. In the New Testament we read in Romans 8:3: For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. The likeness God wants to share with us becomes visible and tangible. God enters our world in human form in the life of Jesus. This is God’s gift of hope to the world, his bringing us back into his presence again. Jesus’ perfect example of service and devotion to his heavenly Father, his ministry of love and compassion shown to all is the path for us to follow.

God foreknew, predestined and conformed believers to Christ’s likeness because the Son holds the position of highest honor in the great family of God of which we are heirs.

God exhorts us to be steeped in his Word because: All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16).
