Studying and Scripture

How can I tap into the mind and persona of God and his Son? How can I possibly understand a God who snapped his fingers and created the universe, yet who is also that gentle whisper in my soul. How do I communicate with Jesus? How can I discover his purpose for my life?

What works for me, is to study the Bible. Memorizing Scripture by heart is powerful. Although I might not know what to pray, the Holy Spirit will sometimes nudge me to use a verse I have memorized. At other times, when I am angry or tempted, or when hurtful thoughts invade, I conscious repeat a verse that I have committed to memory. Remarkably the hurt and anger dissipate, leaving a sense of peace (Isa 40; Psalm 23; Psalm 91).

During our evening walks, when Diana and I pray for family or friends in ill-health or for spiritual renewal in our Gemeinde or our home country, we claim the promises in Scripture. Then in faith we watch the Lord transform and heal lives. By his wounds we are healed (Isaiah 53:5). He promises to forgive and heal our land when we repent (2 Chronicles 7:14).

Actively seeking his will at each step of our journey is exciting and purposeful. In Romans 12:2, we are urged to transform and renew our minds in order to be able to test and approve God’s will. This can only happen if we study and keep Scripture in our heart and memory.

Studying Scripture helps me to understand the meaning and context of Bible passages. Memor Scripture helps me to use his Word in a situation when inspired by the Holy Spirit.

His Word is living, active and powerful (Hebrews 4:12). When we study Scripture, hearts are changed; people are healed; there is revival; and Jesus is praised and honored. And we come a little closer to being like him.
