Greater Works Than Jesus?

“Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it”(John 14:12-14).

That’s quite a statement from Jesus. If we believe in him and his works, we will do greater things than Jesus? At first reading, that sets some high expectations, and certainly seems implausible. We cannot raise the dead, turn water into wine or perform the other many miracles that Jesus did. But I don’t believe that’s what is expected of us here. Jesus will help us do what is necessary; he tells us to ask in his name, and it will be done.

While on earth, Jesus performed these miracles for a purpose. He has other tasks for us while we are here, and he will equip us with whatever is necessary to accomplish them. Jesus will work through us.

Can we raise the dead? No, but we can turn others to Jesus. Then through their growing faith in Christ, their life on earth will be changed and this will lead to eternal life in heaven.

Perhaps this is what Jesus had in mind; we cannot do exactly what he has done, but we can do as he has commanded us. This should be what drives us every day. Think of a world where everyone has heard and accepted the true promise of the salvation we have been given. What a world that would be!

Prayer: Dear Father, we are thankful for your promises. Use us. Remind us of your commandments and give us the strength and wisdom necessary to fulfil these duties. In your name we pray. Amen
