Jesus: Mouthpiece of God

“I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word.Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you.For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me.I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours(John 17:6-9).

“Mouthpiece of God” is not a name unique to Jesus. As a matter of fact, all the prophets through history were the mouthpieces of God. The original Hebrew word for prophet is navi(נָבִיא) which means “spokesman.” Apart from Jesus, the three best known were Moses, Elijah and Isaiah.  Through generations God ordained prophetsto convey the messages of his loving kindness as well as his judgements to the Israelites. As a spokesman, Jesus further told the message of the kingdom of heaven. 

He called and taught the disciples.The logical question that arises from today’s scripture is what message Jesus conveyed to make the disciples believe in him. The author of this gospel, Apostle John, was so convinced that he began his book with this profound statement: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made (John 1:1-2). 

Jesus is the very Word of creation and the reason he came is given in Matthew 5:17: “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.”  He came to the world to make the ultimate sacrifice by his crucifixion. By his blood, our sins are washed away and we are reconciled with God the Father. This is the fulfilment of the laws and what we should convey to the world.  

Prayer:I pray that we don’t invent a new gospel by our own worldly wisdom and understanding, or by sound philosophical argument. But let us be a faithful mouthpiece of God by telling the true gospel of Jesus and by simply saying: For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life(John 3:16).
