Eternity Starts Now

After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed: “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him (John 17:1-2).

When you read this, what are your thoughts? Do you think to yourself that if you are good or strive to be good, that you will hopefully go to heaven; that your sins have been taken away, so all is forgiven? Is that enough?

Verse 3 continues: And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. Writing this makes the hair on my arms stand up. Here is Jesus using the present tense… And this is eternal life

Eternal life is now, here for all those who believe in Jesus Christ. We don’t need to wait for some future date when we go to heaven and everything is perfect according to our Lord. That’s wonderful! John is saying: Don’t miss out by thinking that believing in Jesus Christ means only that you won’t go to hell. It is so much more. You will be missing out on the everlasting life, the intimate life that the Lord wants to have with you right now.

There are many who will disagree and believe that eternal life only becomes a reality after our bodies die when finally, our souls can join our Lord. But in the Gospel of John, eternal life pertains to the present.

Prayer: Praise our Savior, our Lord. Thank you for being here for us and for allowing us to begin our eternal life now. Let us strive to love you even more closely, day by day. Touch us Lord and we will be healed. Let us realize how blessed we are. We glorify you Lord, forever and ever. Amen.
