Take Heart

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).

The key point here is that the world threw its worst at Jesus, and Jesus overcame it. Do we have courage knowing that we do not need to conquer the world, but that we are more than conquerors through him who loved us (Romans 8:37)?

Jesus comes back to what he has told his disciples before. He is the Good Shepherd, our Prince of Peace and our Savior. In him we will indeed find the living water and thirst no more.

Yet, Jesus is also clear that we will live in a fallen world for a short time. A world created perfect by the Lord was corrupted through the fall of man but is awaiting restoration at Christ’s second coming. Our life in this fallen world will be full of hardships. We will face natural catastrophes, scarce resources, illness, diseases, war and persecution. Many of us may even “go home” to eternity (die) because of such hardships.

Jesus encourages us to not lose heart during our hardships. Rather we should rejoice, because in our hardships we get to take part in his tremendous victory over sin and its ultimate consequence, death. Through Christ we are redeemed from God’s just punishment and reconciled with him. In this we should rejoice and have peace in our lives in the world.
