Sunday school SUNDAY SCHOOL every SUNDAY UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED Classrooms (for regular Sunday school)
Please check the bulletin each Sunday before the service for possible changes. New! Kids In Worship Service We're trying something new! Beginning Sunday, October 5, children in the John, Luke, Mark, Matthew and Paul Sunday school classes will join their parents every Sunday (except the last Sunday of the month) for the first part of the morning worship service. They will be dismissed just before the sermon to their Sunday school classes and can be picked up by their parents following the service as usual. On the last Sunday of every month, there will be either Junior Church or Kids Worship! On these Sundays, children will go directly to the Kantonsschule at 11:20 am. Note: This change does not affect other Sunday school classes. As usual, the Love, Hope and Faith children should be brought directly to their Sunday school classes beginning at 11:20 am each Sunday - except the first Sunday of the month. The Nursery, Mini Lambs, Lambs and Sheep will also continue to begin their lessons at 11:30 every Sunday of the month. 1. Program The Sunday school program at IPC consists of three parts: the regular weekly program, children's worship time and special programs. Parents, teachers and assistants will be notified of changes to the program. Weekly Program: The Sunday school program at IPC is committed to presenting God to children and families and helping them to understand and apply the truth of God's Word in attitude and service. 11:20: Classrooms will be opened to students.* 11:30: Classes begin. (*see note above) Parents should accompany all children aged 2-6 years to their classes and pick them up promptly after the worship service. Children aged 7 - 11 will be pick-up by parents immediately after the worship service unless arranged otherwise with the teachers. If parents are unable to pick up the children due to other commitments in the church, they may ask friends or other parents to bring their children to them. They can also contact the Sunday school director or the safety officers for help. The children's offering is taken at the children's worship time, and directly benefits our mission's project, the Selam Children's Home in Ethiopia. Children's worship time: The Faith, Hope and Love classes (4 - 6s) assemble each week except the first Sunday of each month for P.O.S.T. (Prayer, Offering and Singing Together) before beginning their individual lessons. For the Matthew, Mark, Luke, John and Paul classes (7 - 11s), worship time will consist of regular song & praise times and a Junior Church program every 4 - 8 weeks, which will follow up on the children's message given in worship. Special Programs take place at irregular intervals for Christian celebration, such as the Christmas pageant and Palm Sunday procession, or for the promotion of a sense of unity, such as the annual Sunday School Appreciation Sunday. Parents and staff will be notified of these events. The IPC Sunday school is run and staffed by volunteers. The Sunday school handbook is designed to familiarize parents, teachers and assistants with the administrative procedures in order to promote a smooth running of the program. Suggestions and comments are welcome, and should be given to the Sunday School Director. 2. Volunteers The IPC Sunday school is entirely staffed by volunteers. Given the large enrollment (more than 200 children enrolled at the end of 2006), we are counting on parents to volunteer and help in the teaching of and assisting in the classes, as well as in other aspects of the administration. Except for the Nursery, parent involvement, however, is not obligatory. 3. Registration For student safety and to ensure the quality of our classes, all regular students should be registered. New parents should register their child/ren with their child/ren's teacher before the start of their first class. Visitors with young children or children who do not speak fluent English should accompany their children to their classrooms. 4. Class Assignment Children are assigned to a class according to their year of birth. Parents should discuss any individual development considerations with the child's teachers or the director. 5. Parental Input There are many ways parents can help make our Sunday school a successful program other than volunteering as regular helpers:
For a smooth-running Sunday school, we also request that you, as parents:
6. Teaching/Assisting Scheduling Ideally, the teaching team for each class consists of 6 persons: three teams of one teacher and one assistant, with one teacher acting as the head teacher. Head teachers are responsible for scheduling, parent contact and team building. When an issue arises for an individual class, the head teacher should be contacted. Teachers should arrive in their classrooms between 11:00 and 11:15am to prepare and be able to greet students at 11:20. All classroom buildings will be opened to teachers at 11:00am to allow early preparation. The teaching schedule is drawn up by the head teacher of each class and communicated to their team members for approval. The final schedule should be sent to the director. When teachers and assistants are unable to carry out their scheduled duty, they should first try to switch with members of the same teaching team, and inform the head teacher of any changes. If that does not work, a substitute should be called by the head teacher. As a last resort the director should be called. The director should be informed of any schedule changes. PLEASE NOTE : It is intended to have two adults present in each classroom; this is, however, not guaranteed. In the event that the scheduled teacher is prevented from teaching a class, the class may be cancelled and the children will be accompanied by the Safety Officer to their parents in the sanctuary. 7. Summer Sunday School We follow the schedule of the Zürich public school system. The frequency and number of summer classes depends on both the need and the availability of volunteers. A detailed program will be announced at the beginning of summer. 8. Teaching Materials Our current teaching materials are from the Gospel Light publisher. Supplementary materials may be prepared by individual teachers or assistants. Classrooms are stocked with basic supplies. Teachers and assistants are welcome to make requests for common supplies. Alternatively, approved supplies may be purchased individually and reimbursed at a later date. 9. Classroom Discipline We believe that Sunday school is a place where children learn about Jesus and are trained to serve the Lord in the future. In order for the teachers to teach the lessons and for children to benefit from classes, proper classroom behavior is expected from all students. Disruptive behavior may result in a temporary dismissal of a child from class. (We believe, however, that physical discipline does not have a place in the IPC Sunday school). Except for the very young, personal toys should not be brought to classrooms. 10. Teachers' Training An annual meeting of teachers and assistants is scheduled at the start of the Sunday school year. The teaching team for each class will meet a few times a year, as agreed upon by the team and organized by the head teacher of each class. Further opportunities for training will also be provided on specified Sunday mornings at 10:00am. Volunteers for topical training are welcome and encouraged. 11. Disclaimers Our Sunday school is run and staffed by volunteers. While we try our best to serve the congregation and to ensure a safe environment for our children, we do not guarantee a program and outcome satisfying to all parents and children. Parents are expected to have health, accident and liability insurance for their children. IPC does not provide insurance coverage for Sunday school children, and we refuse all liability for any accident that may occur under our supervision during Sunday school hours. Parents who do not accept these terms and conditions should not send their children to the Sunday school. Completion of the registration form will constitute your acceptance and agreement of these terms and conditions. For additional information please contact Shuk-ha
